With a history that dates back before the Revolutionary War, Hopewell Township’s past spans numerous life-changing and world-shaping events. And while it may be easy to imagine a time when horse carriages roamed the streets instead of today’s vehicles and George Washington’s armies rested before marching on to Trenton, a local historian is slated to share some of the lesser-known tales of Hopewell village.
On Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 7-8 p.m., Jack Koeppel will regale attendees with a more in-depth look at some of the township’s more popular legends as part of the Hopewell Public Library’s Wednesday Night Out series.
While most Hopewell residents are aware of The Frog War, St. Michael’s Orphanage and the utopian community of Ralston Heights and the Castle, Koeppel’s well-researched and illustrated historical presentations will shed some light on those stories and more.
Other stories slated for Koeppel’s talk include ES Wells’ Stock Farm and his Rough-On-Rats fortune, John Piggott’s Hopewell Valley Agricultural Warehouse, Miss Boggs’ Hopewell Female Seminary, Hoproco tin toys and Cox’s Shaving Parlor.
The Hopewell Public Library’s Wednesday Night Out talk series is held on the first Wednesday of each month. Due to their popularity, these talks are usually held at the Hopewell Train Station. However, to accommodate a larger audience, this month’s talk will be held at the newly renovated Hopewell Theater, located at 5 South Greenwood Avenue, in Hopewell Borough.
