East Brunswick wins second straight GMC volleyball title

The East Brunswick High School girls’ volleyball team successfully defended its championship in the Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) Tournament when the Bears knocked out Colonia High School, 2-0, on Oct. 28 at John P. Stevens High School in Edison.

The Bears won the championship match with scores of 25-16 and 25-23.

Senior Jordyn Horowitz led East Brunswick with seven kills in the two games, while senior Samantha Balsamo produced a team-high 15 assists in the victory.

Earlier this season, Horowitz and Balsamo set school records. Horowitz became the first from the school to record 500 kills, and Balsamo was the first to register 1,000 assists.

Horowitz, Balsamo, and Kayla Benesz was named to the GMC All-Red Division Team. Horowitz and Balsamo were also named to the GMC All-Conference Team.

East Brunswick’s Christian Portera was named GMC Red Division Coach of the Year after he guided the Bears to the division title.

Last year, the Bears beat Monroe Township High School, 2-0 (25-22 and 25-19), in the tournament finals.
