METUCHEN — Jay Muldoon, who had been serving as the borough’s interim borough administrator since Sept. 1, will remain in the role on a permanent basis.
The Borough Council approved a resolution appointing and confirming Muldoon in the role at a meeting on Dec. 4.
“I’m pleased that the mayor and council selected me as the permanent borough administrator for Metuchen after serving as interim administrator since September 1,” Muldoon said. “I appreciate the confidence they have expressed in my abilities to lead the day to day operations of the Borough and supervise our dedicated and talented employees. I look forward to working with the mayor, Council and borough employees to better serve our residents.”
Councilwoman Allison Inserro, a member of the Personnel Committee, said an advertisement for a borough administrator was placed with the New Jersey League of Municipalities in September.
The borough received 14 resumes, which included Muldoon’s resume.
Inserro said six resumes were disqualified due to incorrect addresses and other issues and five other resumes were simply disqualified.
“The other two resumes were good; [however], the two resumes had high salary expectations,” she said. “All in all we were satisfied with Mr. Muldoon’s performance and tonight we move to appoint [him as] permanent administrator.”
In August, Muldoon resigned from his seat on the council and began serving as interim borough administrator on Sept. 1.
With the sudden resignation of Borough Administrator Jennifer Maier on Aug. 9, Mayor Peter Cammarano had said it became apparent that the borough needed someone to step into the role as interim borough administrator.
Established by ordinance in 1970 the borough administrator is the chief administrative officer serving an indefinite term. The administrator is responsible for the preparation of the budget, personnel administration and policy implementation.
A variety of additional duties are prescribed in the ordinance which are designed to relieve the council of many of the daily routine administrative matters.
Muldoon was also appointed to serve as a class II member to the Planning Board in his role as borough administrator. His annual salary will be $130,000.
