The Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education has extended its contract with the firm that operates a water and sewage system at Colts Neck High School.

Business Administrator Sean Boyce explained that when the high school was constructed, there was no public water or sewage system available to which the building could be connected. He said a self-sustaining water and sewage facility was constructed at the school.

Boyce said the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection requires a licensed company to operate a plant such as the one in place at the high school.

For the past three years, Pennoni Associates, Philadelphia, has provided professional engineering services for the operation and maintenance of the school’s sanitary treatment and disposal system.

The board has renewed the company’s contract for $93,027. Three bids for the contract were received and Boyce said Pennoni was awarded the contract based on its familiarity with the sanitary treatment and disposal system and the fact that the other firms that submitted bids were not familiar with the type of system that is in use.

In other business, the board announced that a cooperative ice hockey program between Marlboro and Holmdel high schools will remain in place.

Marlboro High School has an ice hockey team and Holmdel High School, which is not part of the Freehold Regional High School District, does not have a team.

Boyce said that under certain circumstances, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association allows two schools to form a cooperative program in a sport.

Since 2014, students from Holmdel have been allowed to play on Marlboro’s ice hockey team. The agreement will remain in effect for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years, according to the board.

A cooperative ice hockey program has also been in place between Freehold High School and Raritan High School of Hazlet, which is also not part of the Freehold Regional High School District.
