JACKSON – A resident of a Jackson and a township police officer were described as being OK two weeks after they were injured during an incident involving five mixed-breed dogs that police described as “pit bull type” animals.

The incident in which the resident and the police officer were injured occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Jan. 11 in the area of South Boston and Bennetts Mills roads.

The woman was walking her pit bull dog when five dogs got out of their fenced-in area as the woman and her pet were walking by on the street, Pieslak said.

“The police happened to come upon the attack through routine patrol. (An officer) pepper sprayed the dogs and that caused four of them to run back to their yard. One dog had to be chased down,” he said.

Police described the dogs that got loose from the yard as “pit bull type” dogs.

During the incident, Police Officer Kyle Stybe attempted to intervene and was bitten on the arm by one dog before he used oleoresin capsicum spray to disperse the attacking dogs.

Police said the woman was transported to a hospital for treatment of bites. Her dog, which was also bitten, was transported to a veterinarian for treatment.

Pieslak said the dogs that committed the attack were quarantined at home, which is the standard operating procedure. The dogs’ owner received a summons as a result of the dogs running off the property.

“All the dogs have been checked and all are OK. They have remained at the house and are still there. The woman is OK and everything is fine that we know of,” Pieslak said on Jan. 24.
