ENGLISHTOWN – Two officers who serve in the Englishtown Police Department have temporarily been appointed to the position of acting sergeant.
Trevor Lee Martinson and Alex M. Dinicola III were appointed acting sergeants during the Jan. 24 meeting of the Borough Council.
Council members Gregory Wojyn, Maryanne Krawiec, Lori Cooke and Dan Marter voted to approve the resolutions. Council President Cecilia Robilotti and Councilman Eric Mann were absent.
After the resolutions were passed, Martinson and Dinicola were sworn in as acting sergeants by Krawiec, who is Englishtown’s police commissioner.
Martinson and Dinicola each held the position of corporal prior to being appointed as acting sergeants.
According to the resolutions, the appointments became effective Jan. 1 and are on an as-needed and temporary basis. The appointments will terminate upon a determination by the borough’s police commission that they are no longer necessary or upon the establishment of a permanent promotional list for the rank of sergeant.
If the position of acting sergeant is terminated, Martinson and Dinicola will return to the rank of corporal.
Apart from Martinson and Dinicola in their acting positions, there are currently no sergeants in the police department. The position carries an annual salary of $77,841.
In other business, council members authorized the purchase of $5,350 worth of ammunition for the police department from Eagle Point Gun Shop, West Deptford.
Lt. Peter Cooke serves as the police department’s officer in charge; there is no police chief.
During the meeting, the council members went into executive (closed) session to discuss an ordinance regarding the position of police chief. An ordinance pertaining to that position may be considered at a future meeting.
According to a police activity report, during 2017, 5,809 calls for service were made to the police department and 2,256 of those calls required a police report.
During 2017, there were 5,425 motor vehicle stops conducted, with 3,802 non-parking summonses issued and 58 parking summonses issued, for a total of 3,860 motor vehicle summonses, according to the activity report.
Police said 210 motor vehicles were impounded and there were 86 motor vehicle collision reports.
A total of 162 warrants, summonses and ordinance violations were issued during 2017, 108 criminal and offense summonses were issued, 29 criminal warrants were issued and 25 borough ordinance summonses were issued.
There were 332 arrest reports generated by the police department during the year, according to the activity report.
