The Old Bridge High School boys’ basketball team’s season came to an end on March 1, but head coach Jim Macomber is happy with both the team’s success this year and its potential for next year.
“We were 19-8 this year,” he said. “We were 19-9 last year. So that’s the same amount of wins with one less loss this year. I’m so proud of these guys. They battled hard all year long. We’re a young team. We lost one of our best players, [Jared Meyer], in the fourth game of the season, and we never gave up.”
The Knights lost to Hightstown High School, 72-36, in Hightstown in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament. Junior Julius Belton led the team with 15 points, while Ryan Delacuesta had eight points.
Last year, the Knights lost in the semifinals of the Central Jersey, Group 4 tournament to Hunterdon Central Regional High School, 61-28. Hunterdon Central went on to win the sectional championship.
Macomber recognized that things did not go as planned for Old Bridge in its loss this year to Hightstown.
“Tonight didn’t go so well,” the coach said. “Not good at all, but again, sometimes that happens. These kids deserve all the praise in the world for how they battled all year.”
Macomber has high hopes for next year.
“Next year, I hope to win both a county title and compete for a state title as well,” he said. “Like I said, we’re a young team that got a lot of experience this year. That should really help us going into next season if we do the work in the offseason to get better.”
