A tractor-trailer overturned on May 1, spilling its contents onto the New Jersey Turnpike off-ramp at Exit 9, according to information provided by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT).

The HAZMAT and New Jersey Turnpike Authority crews have been on scene investigating and cleaning the spill, assisted by DOT crews.

All lanes on Route 18 will likely remain closed through the evening commute and additional closures may be necessary, according to the statement.

The DOT advises motorists to avoid this stretch of road if possible and to follow posted detours. Heavy delays are expected into the evening commute.
