The man who has been charged with killing a Freehold Borough woman as she drove her car on Route 33 in Freehold Township will remain in the custody of law enforcement authorities until the case against him is decided.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced on May 25 that following a hearing that day before state Superior Court Judge Paul X. Escandon, sitting in Freehold, Kader Mustafa, 36, was denied release and would be detained pending trial in connection with the death of Sciasia Calhoun, 24, of Freehold Borough.
The case is being prosecuted by assistant prosecutors John Loughery and Martha Nye.
Mustafa is accused of firing a weapon from his vehicle into a vehicle that was being driven by Calhoun on the evening of May 3 at the Route 33 bypass and Halls Mills Road, Freehold Township. Calhoun was in the car with her boyfriend and their 1-year-old child.
Calhoun was struck by the shot. After emergency crews responded to the scene, Calhoun was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, where she was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of May 4, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Mustafa was arrested in Manalapan at about 8 a.m. May 4. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Authorities said that neither Calhoun’s boyfriend nor her child sustained any physical injuries during the attack.
