The initiative to provide a nurturing educational environment to individuals with disabilities through academics and physical education continues to shine at the Harbor School in Eatontown.

As the new school year begins, Jenn Bogin, the adaptive physical education and health teacher at Harbor School, said her goal is to “create a positive learning environment” and motivate her students to live “healthy and active lifestyles.”

The Harbor School is an academic facility for students with special needs who range in age from 5 to 21 years old. The services that are offered at Harbor School are catered to meet the needs of the individual, Bogin said.

“Our school is divided into elementary, middle and high school,” Bogin said. “Our academic programs cover literacy and reading, language arts, handwriting, math, social studies, science, technology, art, music, physical education, health and school to work transition programs.”

Before this school year started, students continued their physical and academic education at the Harbor School by participating in a Word Cup event over the summer.

“Students learned fun facts about the country their class had chosen, including France, Croatia, Peru, Great Britain, Lichtenstein, the United States, Kosovo, Portugal, Mexico, and Italy … World Cup Day at the Harbor School included 12 different soccer and agility stations in the gym that focused on fine and gross motor skills, modified so students could participate to their fullest ability,” according to a press release from the school.

Bogin said events such as World Cup Day help students with team building incentives and emphasize the importance of physical activity to help maintain active and balanced lifestyles.

“Students will be participating this year in a variety of skill building and teamwork along with lead up activities to form organized games in various sports. These will include soccer, bowling, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball and softball. Other activities will include scooters, parachute, stations and cooperative learning games. Classes will also have the opportunity to go swimming throughout the year. Some of  our students participate in the First Tee Golf program every Monday.

“Students will also participate throughout the year in our various intramural games with students from our sister schools, Alpha School (Jackson) and Gateway School (Carteret). Intramural sports include soccer, basketball, floor hockey, baseball, kickball and beachball volleyball. A group of students participate each year in Special Olympics for Bocce Ball during the spring,” Bogin said.
Bogin said the education that is offered at the Harbor School, both physical and academic, helps mold the individual into the best version of themselves.
“The school seeks to empower each student with skills for life, work, and recreation, believing that every individual possesses the dignity and potential to contribute to a better world,” Bogin said.
