FREEHOLD – The Borough Council has awarded a contract for improvements to a road in Freehold Borough.
On Oct. 1, council members awarded a $242,627 contract to Seacoast Construction, East Brunswick, for an improvement project to Vredenburgh Avenue, near South Street.
According to a resolution, the project was pursued after officials determined the road was in need of repair and improvement. Plans and specifications for the improvements were designed by Borough Engineer William Wentzien.
Bids seeking the contract were also submitted by Lancha Construction, which bid $370,684; Fiore Paving, which bid $368,115; the Earle Companies, which bid $301,313; and S. Batata Construction, which bid $271,789.
Seacoast Construction was awarded the contract as the lowest bidder after Wentizen determined the firm was qualified to perform the required work, according to the resolution. The improvements to Vredenburgh Avenue will involve road milling and road resurfacing.
Residents of Vredenburgh Avenue thanked the council for authorizing the improvements and asked how the road repairs would impact sewer repairs on their street. Officials said the valves in the street will be examined and repaired before the road work begins.
In other business, council members honored the Abundant Life Church of God, Freehold Township, on the occasion of its new activity center dedication. According to a resolution, the Abundant Life Church of God is a multicultural church that has served the Freehold Borough community since 1988 when it was based in the borough. The church moved to a new facility in Freehold Township in 2003.
The Abundant Life Church of God, according to the resolution, has since grown and expanded, including having 4,000 square feet added to its second floor to meet the needs of youth and children’s ministries. The new activity center will be used for purposes such as sports outreach ministry, children and youth events, and community outreach.
Finally, council members passed a resolution honoring Bethel AME Church on its 170th anniversary. Bethel AME Church was founded in 1848 in Englishtown and relocated to Freehold Borough in 1865, according to the resolution.
