EAST BRUNSWICK – A man has been charged with four counts of burglary for allegedly committing a robbery, which in turn led to two township schools enacting a shelter-in-place.
Around 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the area of Westons Mills Road, a 20-year-old male resident of New Brunswick allegedly fled on a bicycle after reportedly robbing a resident at knifepoint. East Brunswick police officers converged on the area and conducted a search for the suspect with the assistance of the New Jersey State Police, according to the East Brunswick Police Department.
During this time, Lawrence Elementary Brook School and Churchill Junior High School were placed on shelter-in-place.
The suspect was reportedly identified by neighbors as the person who recently committed motor vehicle burglaries and when confronted, pulled a knife on the residents and fled, according to police.
While fleeing, the man allegedly burglarized another motor vehicle on Gage Road and continued to evade officers, police said. The search for the man extended to the area of the New Jersey Turnpike where, with the assistance of New Jersey State Police K-9 Cullen, he was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
Once the man was placed under arrest, the schools were taken off shelter-in-place, according to police.
The man was charged with four counts of burglary, resisting arrest, terroristic threats and weapons offenses. He was remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a court date.
