EDISON – An Edison police officer has been charged with driving under the influence following a motor vehicle accident, according to Police Chief Thomas Bryan.

The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 21, police said. A vehicle, which Robert Bertucci was driving, allegedly rear-ended another car on Route 1 near John Street, police said.

Bertucci, who has been with the department since 2014 and served as a police officer in Springfield Township three years prior to coming to Edison, is suspended with pay while the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau investigates the incident, Bryan said.

Two people at the scene who were in the car Bertucci reportedly hit were examined by emergency medical personnel (EMTs). Neither required medical attention, police said.

Bertucci was also examined by EMTs and an off-duty township officer, who was a passenger in Bertucci’s vehicle. Neither officers required further medical attention, police said.
