JACKSON – The James Volpe Foundation’s eighth annual golf outing and luncheon will take place on May 13 at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Lakewood.

The foundation is named for James Volpe, who died in a motor vehicle accident during his senior year at Jackson Memorial High School in 2011. Volpe was a baseball player at Jackson Memorial and was planning to attend Kean University.

Money raised by the foundation funds scholarships that are presented to seniors at Jackson Memorial High School and Jackson Liberty High School who emulate James Volpe’s character, according to John Mucia Jr., who is the foundation’s vice president.

“It is an interesting date that we are having the event this year because it is the anniversary date of the day James passed away,” Mucia said. “We want to keep James’ memory alive. We are looking at eight years on that date, it is a long time and we miss him a lot.

“We try to do some of these (fundraising) events every year and we have been very lucky, blessed and grateful to have such a nice support base from our local Jackson community as well as from surrounding communities,” he said.

Mucia said last year’s golf outing was sold out. This year’s event on May 13 will see golfers check in at 7:15 a.m. and begin a scramble start at 8:30 a.m. Registration information may be found at jvfgolf2019.eventbrite.com

The foundation’s directors have said that in addition to providing scholarships to local high school students, the James Volpe Foundation makes other donations in the community.
