The Bordentown Regional High School baseball team’s run to win a state sectional championship came up short but that finish can not overshadow a successful spring season.
After a season where the Scotties came out cold in the early spring only to eventually heat up their bats and ring up multiple winning streaks along the way, their year came to a close this week.
Bordentown’s bid to win the Central Jersey, Group 2 state sectional tournament title was thwarted when the seventh-seeded Scotties fell to sixth-seeded Robbinsville High School, 2-1, in the semifinals on May 28 in Robbinsville.
Robbinsville (18-8) advanced to the state sectional final on May 31 where it meets the survivor of the other semifinal between top-seeded Governor Livingston High School of Berkeley Heights and fifth-seeded Point Pleasant Borough High School.
This spring featured a co-championship of the Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division for the Scotties, who shared the league title with Delran High School. Each ended 7-1 in the division.
The Scotties, who finished the year with a 13-8 overall record, were led by third baseman Luke Mabin, first baseman Dylan Wood and shortstop Chris Wade.
Wood paced the offense for Bordentown this season, who not only led his squad in at-bats with 73 plate appearances, but he topped the Scotties with a .438 batting average. He finished with 32 hits, 22 RBI and 14 runs scored.
Wade, the leadoff batter, put up impressive numbers on the year as well when he hit .382 and recorded 26 hits. Wade also scored 21 runs, knocked in 15 runs and stole 11 bases this season.
Mabin followed with a batting average of .300 and connected for 21 hits while he scored 14 runs, drove in 17 runs and stole four bases.
While the Scotties bats provided multiple standouts in the lineup this year, they had several strong arms on the mound as well in Kyle Kato, Kyle Marchetti and Tommy Niedermaier.
With a total of 51 innings pitched, Kato was the go-to man on the mound where he finished the season with a 5-2 record, struck out 50 and posted an ERA of 1.51.
Marchetti, in 21 innings on the hill, Marchetti finished the season with an overall record of 3-0, struck out 27 and posted an ERA at 2.00.
Although Niedermaier’s pitching duties were usually assigned in relief efforts from the bullpen, he answered the call multiple times throughout the year. In 22.1 innings, Niedermaier earned two victories, struck out 25 and posted an ERA at 1.25.
Looking toward next season, Bordentown will likely introduce many new faces in the lineup given that nine key starting seniors on the team will graduate.
Next spring, coach Chris Glenn will call on pitchers Niedermaier and Nick Nemes to lead a youthful squad.
