The Red Bank Humanists will serve as the host to a talk by Ron Flannery entitled “Emergence” on Feb. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Red Bank Charter School.
The free program is open to the public. The school is located at 58 Oakland St. in Red Bank.
Emergence is a relatively unnoticed science but has far-reaching consequences. The natural world is not designed, directed, or managed and yet it organizes itself into complex structures, from anthills to societies and possibly even the universe itself, according to a press release.
Flannery’s talk will discuss what emergence is, the types of emergence, and examples of emergence.
Flannery is a retired computer scientist who spent 45 years in the computer industry. In that time, he worked for various companies including the U.S. Army, Bell Laboratories, AT&T, Amdahl, and EMC, and has held nearly every occupational title in that space, according to the press release.
Flannery was a member of Mensa for several years and is currently a board member of the Red Bank Humanists, according to the press release.
At the forum, the Red Bank Humanists will be collecting donations for the Joan Valentine House in Point Pleasant Beach.
The Joan Valentine House is a 48-bed facility with a mission to provide housing and support services to low-income adults with mental illness. Men’s and women’s toiletries are needed.
