Chemical leak at Lyondell Basell plant contained within two hours; two people treated for respiratory issues

EDISON – A chemical leak at the Lyondell Basell plant on Meadow Road last night, Aug. 23, was contained within two hours, according to Police Lt. Robert Dudash.

The chemical leak of 200 gallons of liquid titanium tetrachloride, which the plant manufactures, occurred at 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, according to police.

Two employees from an adjacent business were treated for respiratory issues, which have been deemed non-life-threatening injuries, Dudash said.

Employees at the 24/7 facility were able to contain the leak and provide the appropriate repairs by about 10:30 p.m., Dudash said.

Police had put a shelter in place alert through Nixle, which was lifted by 10:30 p.m.

Police along, with Middlesex County HazMat, state Environmental Protection Agency, Edison Fire Department and Edison Office of Emergency Management were at the scene.
