South Brunswick homeowners to pay approximately $9,800 in taxes next year

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The majority of expenditures in this year’s municipal budget for South Brunswick taxpayers include a capital improvements increase of $1.5 million due to a down payment for the library expansion project; and the purchase of property, some of it for open space.

Pension costs increased by approximately $900,000, which is statutory by the state, said John Bolcato, South Brunswick’s chief financial officer.

The township experienced some COVID-19 expenses of approximately $450,000 in 2020 that we were reimbursed in 2021, Bolcato added.

The municipal budget for Fiscal Year 2021, which includes debt service, is $64,544,559.

The total tax levy, which includes municipal taxes, school taxes, Middlesex County taxes and fire district taxes to be paid by South Brunswick property owners is $207,677,624.

The 2020 tax rate for Fire District 1 residents was 5.124 cents per $100 of assessed valuation; for Fire District 2 residents the tax rate was 5.084 cents per $100 of assessed valuation; for Fire District 3 residents the tax rate was 5.139 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

The 2021 tax rate for Fire District 1 residents is 5.074 cents per $100 of assessed valuation; for Fire District 2 residents the tax rate is 5.033 cents per $100 of assessed valuation; and for Fire District 3 residents the tax rate is 5.091 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

For the owner of a home with an average assessed value of $194,953, Fire District 1 residents would pay $9,891 in total property taxes for the year; Fire District 2 residents would pay $9,811 in total property taxes for the year; and Fire District 3 residents would pay $9,925 in total property taxes for the year.

The payments would be $824.33, $817.67 and $827.09 per month, respectively.
