Lawrence Township schools were put into lockdown May 6 while police searched for a man who fled toward Lawrence High School after he was stopped by police.

A police officer was on routine patrol shortly after 10 a.m. when he saw a pedestrian commit a traffic violation and stopped him on Princeton Pike near Rydal Drive, according to the Lawrence Township Police Department.

The man was uncooperative and refused to provide identification. He fled on foot on Princeton Pike toward the high school. He continued through the football practice field and into Veterans Park. Police searched the area, but could not find him.

Police were subsequently able to identify the man, who was wanted on an active warrant. Additional charges are pending as a result of the incident.

Although the schools were placed into lockdown as a precautionary measure, there is no indication that the man posed a threat to students or staff, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Lawrence Township Police Department at (609) 896-1111.
