“Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964,” showcases six bilingual posters with images and interviews by documentary photographer Leonard Nadel.

This exhibit explores the Bracero Program, which was the largest guest worker program in U.S. history. Between 1942 and 1964, millions of Mexican men came to the United States on short-term labor contracts. The poster exhibition not only tells a story of exploitation, but also one of opportunity, according to the press release.

The “Journey Stories” exhibit consists of seven posters and includes important chapters in American history such as western expansion and Native American displacement, African-American migration from the deep south, and important developments in transportation technology, according to the press release.

SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington, D.C., for 60 years. SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage through a wide range of exhibitions about art, science and history, according to the press release.

The poster exhibits will be on view in the library’s meeting room during regular hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit will be on view from now through Sept. 29. There may be times when the meeting room is closed for events. For more information, call 732-928-4400, option 4.
