SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A Pennsylvania man was charged with eluding an officer after allegedly speeding away from him and then crashing into his patrol car.

South Brunswick Police Officer Matthew Hagood attempted to stop a motorcycle on Route 1 south around 5 p.m. on March 14 because it reportedly had no visible license plate, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.

The motorcycle, which was being operated by a 20-year-old male from Newportville, Pennsylvania, allegedly began to drive at a high rate of speed through Route 1 and onto New Road.

Witnesses reportedly called police headquarters to report a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed near Aldrich Road and New Road, according to the statement.

Around 5:14 p.m., the man allegedly continued to speed east on New Road toward Route 1, when he crashed his motorcycle into Hagood’s police car as he was pulling out of the Kendall Park Fire Department.

The suspect suffered minor injuries from the crash and was treated and released from Princeton Hospital, according to reports.

Hagood was uninjured, according to Deputy Chief James Ryan.

Investigators determined the driver allegedly purchased the motorcycle earlier in the day in Perth Amboy and was operating the motorcycle while it was unregistered and uninsured, according to police. He was charged with eluding a police officer and issued motor vehicle summonses for unclear license plates, reckless driving, improper passing and driving with a suspended license.

The man was detained at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending his first court appearance.
