Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important holidays for Hindus. This holiday is celebrated with different forms of light which all symbolize the metaphorical defeat of darkness and the victory of good over evil.
This year, Diwali falls on Nov. 14 and 15.
Many stores, such as Costco, sell fireworks which are often used to celebrate the holiday. The South Brunswick Fire Chiefs Association wants to remind residents to use legal fireworks safely. New Jersey law only allows certain ground-based, non-aerial fireworks, and novelties such as sparklers. Only use fireworks outside away from buildings; never allow children to play with fireworks; never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully; and after fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding. Never put the spent fireworks in a garbage or recycling can inside a building.
