A Riverside School student has tested positive for COVID-19, making that student the second child in one week to have tested positive for the disease in the Princeton Public School District.

School district officials received notification of the child’s positive test results on Nov. 23. The student was in school Nov. 20, but did not show symptoms until Nov. 23, Interim Superintendent of Schools Barry Galasso said.

The Riverside School student will not be in class this week, and will continue to quarantine at home for 14 days, Galasso said.

Masks and social distancing protocols were in effect while the student was in school, he said.

The Riverside School student is the second one to have tested positive for COVID-19 in a week. School district officials were notified Nov. 22 that a Littlebrook School student had tested positive for COVID-19. The child also is quarantined for 14 days.

In both cases, no close contacts have been identified, Galasso said.

A close contact is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as someone who has been within six feet of an infected person for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, starting two days before the onset of the illness.

“We would like to remind students, families and staff that it is important to submit the daily screening form when we return from remote learning after the Thanksgiving break on Nov. 30,” Galasso said.

The form must be filled out every day throughout the remote learning period of Nov. 30 through Dec. 4. The daily screening is an important tool that is used to keep students, staff and the community as safe as possible, Galasso said.

Galasso said the school district has been fortunate that there have been so few cases associated with the schools, and “to the best of our knowledge, there has been no transmission within our buildings.”
