Hillsborough YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The Y marked the occasion with a ceremony on Oct. 25, held at the Y on East Mountain Road, with donors, volunteers, members, friends, and community leaders.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Y mobilized to support the community in a dire time, including emergency child care for essential workers, food distribution, academic support centers for remote learning, chronic disease programs, and more, according to a prepared statement.

“We’re excited to celebrate Hillsborough YMCA’s milestone anniversary,” David M. Carcieri, president and CEO of Greater Somerset County YMCA, said in the statement. “More than a quarter of a century ago, Hillsborough Township officials and residents pulled together to turn a seed of an idea into reality. The community built this Y. Over the past 25 years, it has become and anchor institution – a place where all people can find support, fellowship, and hope. The Y is essential to the foundation of the community, and it’s poised to serve this vibrant community for years to come.”

To continue to meet community needs, Greater Somerset County YMCA plans to reinvest in Hillsborough YMCA and is currently raising funds for enhancements, including a new wellness center, expanded spaces for youth programs and a new welcome area, according to the statement. The proposed enhancements will provide an improved environment and experience for people of all ages and abilities, including greater accessibility throughout the facility, a more modern space to stay active and engaged, and a positive setting for social connections.

The renovations are part of the Y’s “Strong Past, Bright Future” campaign, a campaign to support reinvestment projects for all four branches of Greater Somerset County YMCA.

At the event, Somerset County Commissioner Director Shanel Y. Robinson said, “We all know Somerset County is a great place to live, work, and play, and that is in no small measure because of our community resources like Hillsborough YMCA. Congratulations on your first 25 years, and I look forward to many, many more,” according to the statement.
