Civil War heroine Arabella Barlow, a great-granddaughter of the Wallace family of Wallace House and Hardenbergh family of Old Dutch Parsonage, was born in Somerville 200 years ago in 1824.

 

Stroll the streets of Somerville for an introduction to the town and transportation in Arabella’s childhood and adult life. Conclude at Arabella’s historic gravestone in Somerville’s Old Cemetery with the story of Arabella’s service on the battlefields of the Civil War, death in a Union hospital in Washington, D.C. and burial back home in Somerville.

 

Admission is free. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

 

This walking tour travels about 2 ½ miles on flat sidewalk.

 

Stay in Somerville after the tour for “Arabella Barlow’s New Jersey in Story & Song,” an outdoors concert by historical musician and balladeer Linda Russell, Saturday, June 1, 2024, 3 p.m. at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites.

 

N.J. Department of Environmental Protection offers this walk and additional hikes across State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites for National Trails Day 2024 in cooperation with the American Hiking Society.
