Finn, a 15-year-old adolescent when Dr. Apple first met him, defiantly marched to a different beat from the very beginning of his life. His parents described him as stubborn and argumentative. No one could tell him what to do and he trusted no one. Dr. Apple was his fourth therapist.
While the young man was difficult to engage, Dr. Apple found him quite likable, with a sweet, childlike nature underneath his surly presentation. He knew things were going well when Finn finally confessed, “I may trust you, if you don’t blow it.”
Dr. Apple will describe the satisfying and productive treatment of this young man, who is now twenty-two years old. This case illustrates the idea that good things cannot be rushed and also illustrates the importance of being a receptive and perceptive therapist who is ready and engaged when the patient offers an opening for a genuine connection.
