The South Orange-Maplewood Adult School (SOMAS) joins forces with James Beard Award-winning chef David Burke for a delicious evening of modern American cuisine paired with three of the finest West Coast wines on the Garden Terrace at Orange Lawn. Tickets are $99 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit SOMAS.
For the first course:
A Harvest Salad of Shaved Brussels Sprouts, Apples, Spiced Walnuts, Shaved Pecorino with a Roasted Shallot Vinaigrette paired with Four Graces Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon, 2017;
Second course: David Burke’s signature Pretzel Crab Raft Paired with Chalk Hill Chardonnay, Sonoma, California, 2017;
Third course: Bison Short Ribs, Wild Mushroom Pasta and Truffle Mousse paired with Belle Glos Pinot Noir, Monterey County, California, 2018.
Fourth Course: Dessert, Chef David Burke’s Cheesecake Pops Dessert.

About the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School (SOMAS):
SOMAS was founded in 1933 during the Great Depression – a beacon of hope where the community could gather and everyone could afford to take classes. They are the oldest operating Adult School in New Jersey and were named a Local Legacy in 2000 by the Library of Congress. The school strives to keep class prices down so that the tradition that our school was founded upon – a community school where people can gather to learn, stay informed and be entertained – will continue.
More than 150 courses and lectures are offered in the fall and spring, with a modified schedule in the summer. These courses enrich the mind, exercise the body and feed the soul. Choices include art, music, business and finance, fitness and recreation, languages and technology.
There is now increased programming for children during the school year which includes computer science classes and Suzuki violin lessons. A children’s summer enrichment program is also sponsored by the Adult School. It is enjoyed by hundreds of kids and teens, and also employs many local high school students and teachers. This specialty program offers something for every child, whether an artist, athlete or scientist.
