Katharine Voorhees Holcombe

Katharine Voorhees Holcombe Katharine Voorhees Holcombe (Kitty) died peacefully Easter, 27 March 2016, surrounded by loving daughter and friends. Kitty was born 12 May 1926 to Virginia and Herbert Voorhees of Hopewell, where she lived until moving in 1995 to Willow Valley Retirement Community in Lancaster PA. In 1948 she married Russell W Holcombe (Hoke), long-time Hopewell resident, scout master, and WWII veteran, who died in 1988. Kitty attended New Jersey College for Women (Douglass College, Rutgers) and spent most of her working life in financial services with Educational Testing Service of Princeton. She strongly believed in community service and was active in the Parent-Teacher Association, Girl Scouts, American Red Cross, Friends-in-Service-Here Meals on Wheels, and the Hopewell Presbyterian Church. Kitty’s hallmark was easy laughter but she also beat everyone at Chinese checkers, whistled any tune in perfect pitch, was terrified of lightning and bats, and adored all things feathered or furry. She was a very special person. Kitty is survived by her daughter Virginia Holcombe of Aptos CA, daughter-in-law Deborah Holcombe of Milton WA, and grandchildren Hunter, Calle, and Emerson Holcombe, whose father was Dwight Russell Holcombe, Kitty’s son who died in 2008. Her ashes were buried in Hopewell’s Highland Cemetery next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Inc.
