SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The South Brunswick Police Department (SBPD) once again launched its Operation Safe Schools program for the beginning of the school year.

The plan placed officers at every school in the district at the start and end of the first few school days as nearly 10,000 students headed back to school on Sept. 5 for private schools and Sept. 7 for public schools.

At any one time, more the a dozen officers were dedicated to the operation, according to a statement released by the SBPD.

“Our focus is to assist in a smooth transition for all students, parents and teachers. We will have officers at every school to increase our visibility. There will also be added traffic enforcement around the schools as motorists get adjusted to reduced speeds and added pedestrian traffic,” Chief Raymond Hayducka said in the statement. “We typically see added traffic around all schools during the first few weeks of the school year as parents and students get adjusted. Motorists need to add additional time for morning commutes. They should be alert for increased pedestrian crossings and school buses.”

Residents should sign up for Nixle.com alerts to get the latest information on traffic conditions, community alerts and emergency information.

“Working together, we can make this a great start to the new school year,” Hayducka said.
