NORTH BRUNSWICK – Nicholas Moccio spent the past five years on an unexpected project.

The 14-year-old has been growing his hair out to 15 inches long.

“Occasionally I trimmed it until I decided to donate it,” he said, “because I’d rather give it to someone in need than throw it away.”

His father Dominic was looking online for a place that participates with Locks of Love or Pantene Beautiful Lengths, and came upon Salon Cemone in Manalapan. Jill Richelson took to the scissors on May 21, chopping off anywhere from 10 to 13 inches of Nicholas’s hair.

“I was excited, and curious about what I would look like,” he said. “I liked the new haircut, I was happy.”

Nicholas is a freshman at North Brunswick Township High School, where he participates in the marching band, winter percussion group and Model UN. This past fall he played the part of Juror No. 2 in the high school’s production of “12 Angry Jurors.”

He said he is glad he will be helping those who need hairpieces due to cancer.

“It feels good knowing that my hair is going to someone in need,” he said.
