SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The South Brunswick Police Department (SBPD) is again launching Operation Safe Schools as school begins this week.

The annual program is designed to increase police presence at all schools in the township during the opening days. Private schools began on Sept. 5, while public schools opened on Sept. 6.

The plan will place officers at every school in the district at the start and end of the school day. In addition, enhanced traffic enforcement zones will be established around the schools for traffic enforcement. At any one time, more then a dozen officers will be dedicated to the operation, according to information provided by the SBPD.

On Sept. 3, the South Brunswick Police Department, in collaboration with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the Middlesex County Comprehensive Traffic Safety Program, also began the “Slow Down in Our Town” initiative. The programs include a saturation of school and residential areas with promotional signs, education and enforcement encouraging motorists to obey traffic laws including speeding, passing stopped school buses and yielding to pedestrians, according to the statement. These initiatives, combined with ongoing traffic enforcement details, are focused on the enhanced safety of students, pedestrians and motorists.

Police ask all residents to use extra care during the first week of school.
