MARLBORO – All members of the community are invited to attend the 11th annual Marlboro Multicultural Day to be held from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 18 at Marlboro High School, 95 N. Main St. (Route 79). The event is free to the public.
This year’s multicultural day will have representation from China, Colombia, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Ukraine and the United States. The autonomous territory of Hong Kong will also be represented.
Marlboro Multicultural Day committee chairwoman Alice Ng said the event will include performances of traditional and contemporary music and dance from China, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Poland, South Korea and the United States. The performances will take place from 1-2:30 p.m.
Following the performances, visitors are invited to visit each represented country’s cultural display and sample ethnic cuisine. There will be craft demonstrations, including origami, Chinese knots and calligraphy. Younger visitors will receive a “passport” which they may have stamped after they visit each “country.”
Ng said the event has grown in popularity and recent years have attracted more than 500 guests.
“I think the success of Marlboro Multicultural Day is due mainly to the people who live and work in the Marlboro area,” Ng said. “We have such a culturally diverse population. It’s natural that they would want to share that with friends and neighbors. Their generosity and enthusiasm is extraordinary and shows how much they love living, working and raising their families here.
“At the core of this group are the members of the multicultural day committee, several of whom were founding members of this event. I am honored to be working alongside this very dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly and selflessly each year to bring this free event to our community.
“We would like to thank Mayor Jonathan Hornik and his staff for supporting and promoting our event every year, as well as the Freehold Regional High School District for donating the facilities and staff at Marlboro High School for our event for the last 11 years,” Ng said.
