EDISON – Three police officers helped save the life of a 26-year-old Edison man, who was trapped upside down after his vehicle flipped over following a motor vehicle accident on April 19, according to police.

Police Sgt. Michael Cimmino and Officers Neel Patel and Phil Smith worked rapidly to remove the man from his Honda Accord after they arrived at the crash scene on Woodbridge Avenue near Edward Stec Boulevard at 6:20 p.m. on April 19, police Lt. Robert Dudash said.

Emergency medical personnel [EMTs] treated and stabilized the 26-year-old motorist at the scene before transporting him to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick.

“This young man sustained internal injuries and internal bleeding,” Dudash said. “He was trapped upside down in his overturned car. The EMTs indicated that our officers helped save his life when they swiftly and safely removed him from his car.”

The accident, which closed Woodbridge Avenue until 9:45 p.m., occurred when the Edison man’s car allegedly drove across Woodbridge Avenue from Edward Stec Boulevard, crossed a grassy median, and struck a westbound Toyota Camry driven by an 18-year-old Edison man, Dudash said.

The impact, Dudash said, caused the Honda Accord to flip over. The 18-year-old Camry driver suffered minor injuries. He was transported to JFK Medical Center in Edison for treatment and released later that night, police said.

No motor vehicle or criminal charges have been filed yet. The identities of both drivers are being withheld until Edison’s accident investigators complete their investigation.
