North Brunswick Township High School and South Brunswick High School both field quality atheltic teams this past spring. They ran the gamut of spring sports, too, from the South Brunswick baseball team to the boys’ tennis teams at both schools.
All the successful squads were worthy of recognition, so here’s a rundown of how they all did.
South Brunswick baseball
South Brunswick baseball coach C.J. Hendricks felt good going into the 2019 season. He knew he had a trio of senior aces, Jacob Ciccone, Justin Cross and Mike Reyes, who could transform the Vikings into a contender.
And that’s exactly what they did.
The Vikings went 18-7, reached the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship game and the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament quarterfinals. They lost to Old Bridge High School, 2-1, in the GMC title game and to Manalapan High School, 7-2, in the state sectional quarterfinals.
Even with those losses, it was a very successful season for the Vikings.
South Brunswick softball
The South Brunswick softball club experienced a similar level of success as the school’s baseball team in 2019. South Brunswick’s softball squad finished 16-7 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament, losing to Montgomery High School, 2-0.
Senior Lindsey Warick and junior Jessica Stadler sparked a powerful offense, as both players hit above .490 and produced more than 45 runs.
North Brunswick girls’ lacrosse
The North Brunswick girls’ lacrosse team won a trophy in 2019, beating Old Bridge, 10-6, in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship game. That alone qualifies as a successful season.
But that wasn’t all that the Raiders did. They also finished 16-6 and made the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 sectional tournament semifinals, falling to Hunterdon Central Regional High School, 18-8.
Alexis Rich, Hayley Greenberg, Katherine Manley and Julia Davies all scored 36 goals or more in 2019. Rich and Greenberg netted 76 and 75, respectively.
North Brunswick boys’ tennis and South Brunswick boys’ tennis
Both of these clubs succeeded in 2019, finishing 17-1 and 10-3, respectively. South Brunswick even won the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship, when it rung up 40 points, outscoring John P. Stevens High School, which scored 38, and East Brunswick High School, which finished with 35.
North Brunswick reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament, losing in the first round to Monroe Township High School, 4-1.
South Brunswick’s singles lineup consisted of Ashwin Kanetkar at first singles, Rushil Vishwanathan at second singles and Akshat Satija at third singles. North Brunswick’s singles lineup featured Abhie Maharana at No. 1 singles, Rishikesh Singh at No. 2 singles and Ashrith Dubakka at No. 3 singles.
South Brunswick boys’ volleyball
The South Brunswick boys’ volleyball team enjoyed the best season in program history this spring, advancing to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Tournament semifinals, its furthest run ever. South Brunswick lost to Hunterdon Central, 2-0, in the state sectional semifinals.
Overall, the Vikings finished 15-11 in 2019.
The roster consisted of nine seniors. Setter Danny Sun ended the season with 495 assists. Seniors Dylan Herrera and Connor Ferry recorded 134 and 121 kills, respectively. But a lot of Vikings benefitted from Sun’s tremendous passing.
South Brunswick girls’ track and field
Track and field is often a more individual sport. But all the big meets have team scores, too. And in the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 sectional meet, the Vikings won the team title with 102.42 points.
Nikhila Obbineni and Jessica Rodgers sparked the championship, placing first in the 1,600-meter run and in the javelin event, respectively.
