EDISON – Billy Beatty, Michael desRanleau, and Nick Fisher, members of Boy Scout Troop 12, were honored in April for earning their Eagle Award.
For his project, Billy built four raised garden beds for the developmentally disabled at Spectrum for Living in Edison. After leveling the ground, he and his team cut landscaping timbers into 3-foot by 8-foot boxes, 24 inches high, and filled them with 12 tons of soil, according to information provided by Robert desRanleau, aassistant scoutmaster for Troop 12.
Currently a senior at Edison High School, Billy has enlisted in the Delayed Entry Program with the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate and will be stationed on a submarine in September. He plans to pursue a career in law enforcement after his service ends.
Michael and his team built a walled garden base for the VFW Post 3117’s main flagpole and laid down a base of river stones for the wooden Battle of Iwo Jima memorial, which his troop built for Edison’s Memorial Day parade last May and later donated to the VFW, according to the statement. As a finishing touch, Michael installed a solar-powered spotlight for the memorial’s flag.
Michael is a senior at Edison High School and will pursue a degree from Rutgers University.
For his project, Nick and his team completed a beautification project for the front of Lincoln Elementary School in Edison, planting weigelia and spirea bushes, globe spruces, azaleas, black-eyed Susans and a weeping Japanese maple tree. New mulch was put down and existing railroad ties were sanded and stained to further extend their life, according to the statement.
Nick is a senior in the building trades at the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High School in Piscataway and upon graduation, will be applying for an apprenticeship with the N.J. Carpenters Union.
