The Spirit of Princeton Flag Day ceremony will take place this year, rain or shine, on Thursday, June 14, at the Princeton Municipal Complex Plaza, 369 Witherspoon Street.  The ceremony will begin at 12 noon.

This year’s ceremony will be dedicated to the life and community spirit of Ray Wadsworth, one of the founders of The Spirit of Princeton. The Spirit of Princeton is a not-for-profit, non-partisan community organization, whose mission is to support and implement events, such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Flag Day, in order to honor the men and women whose perseverance and bravery have enabled our nation to thrive.

The event will feature a speech from Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert. School children from Princeton’s nearby schools will be participating in the ceremony.  Entertainment will be provided by the Garden Statesmen performing barbership quartet choral selections and by bagpiper Ann Witt.

In the United States, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
