A Lawrence Township motorcyclist was killed in a crash Tuesday evening on Route 546 at Scotch Road.
Hopewell Township police, along with the Pennington Fire Company and Pennington Rescue Squad, were dispatched at 6:36 p.m. to word of a motor vehicle crash. Officers arrived to find a Toyota Tundra and a Kawasaki motorcycle had collided.
The Kawasaki was being driven westbound on Route 546 by Orest L. Huraleczko, a 60-year-old man from Titus Avenue in Lawrence Township. Mr. Huraleczko was killed in the impact and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The Toyota, which was southbound on Scotch Road, was driven by Rufino Estuardo, 24, from Ohio Avenue, Ewing. Police said he did not stop at the scene and was located by responding officers about a mile away in a commercial building parking lot with his vehicle. He was not injured.
Police said Mr. Estuardo was a Guatemalan national. He was charged with death by auto, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, driving while intoxicated, failing to observe a red light, reckless driving and being an unlicensed driver.
He was lodged at the Mercer County Correctional Center in default of $200,000 full cash bail.
Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials were notified of his arrest, police said.
Police said they did not know why the vehicles collided. The investigation continues, as does the interviewing of witnesses.
The area was closed to traffic for about two and one-half hours.
The crash is being investigated by Officer James Rosso and Detective Joseph Maccaquano of the Hopewell Township Police Department and Detective Don Santora of the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
