Princeton High School ended its jinx on the ice against the Hun School in the Mercer County Tournament.
And with it, came the Mercer County Tournament championship.
Princeton snapped the Hun School’s six-year reign as the Mercer County Tournament ice hockey champion when it gained revenge and scored an epic 7-5 title victory on Feb. 21.
Hun had defeated Princeton in the Mercer County title game in the last three years.
The county tournament final at the Mercer County Skating Center in West Windsor Township resulted in a dramatic comeback victory for Princeton, which was down by five goals in the second period.
Princeton would first score with 2:08 in the second period off the stick of freshman forward Cooper Zullo.
Princeton would continue to score another six goals, while shutting out Hun late in the second period and in the third period.
Princeton’s offensive charge was led by senior forward Rocco Salvato, who produced four goals. Junior forward Colm Trainor and junior defenseman Austin Micale also finished with a goal apiece for the Little Tigers.
Princeton will now head to the state NJSIAA Public B tournament and is now 18-3-2 on the season.
Hun junior forward Charles Lavoie steered Hun’s offense by connecting for two goals. The team’s offense was aided junior forward Eddie Evaldi, who added a goal, sophomore forward Riley Frost producing a goal and also junior forward William Banford finishing with a goal.
The Hun School’s season is finished after the Mercer County title loss and ended 2019-20 with a 9-14-2 record.
