Third grader Sofia Mutarzin wanted to do something for her extended family in Lviv, Ukraine.

On Feb. 24, Russia had invaded Ukraine, which has since uprooted millions of Ukrainians from their homes.

Sofia created and sold handprint paintings in Ukrainian colors. In three months, she raised $14,000, which went towards the purchase of medical supplies, clothing, bulletproof vests, helmets and even a couple of drones for those fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine.

For her efforts, Hillsborough Mayor Shawn Lipani and the Hillsborough Township Committee presented Sofia with a proclamation.

Three years ago, she had the opportunity to visit Ukraine and her extended family in Lviv, which is the largest Western city in Ukraine.

Sofia said she wanted to help the Ukranian Army not only protect her family, but all the children still in Ukraine.

Sofia and her family are grateful to the Hillsborough community for the outpouring of contributions, support, and solidarity for the people of Ukraine.

For those interested in contributing to Sofia’s fundraiser for Ukraine can buy one of her paintings. Contact her mom, Marta Mutarzin via text 908-294-0755 or Instagram (martuneya) for details.
