Unwind at Norris Lake Tennessee

I’ve already visited some of Tennessee’s best state parks, and this time around, I wanted something lakeside. I always find I’m most relaxed when water is involved in my vacations, and since I had a free weekend during my Tennessee trip, I decided to visit Norris Lake.

When I visited Cumberland Memorial State Park and Pickett State Park, I saw how nice the water looked. So, I’ve done some digging, and apparently, there’s plenty to do in the area.

Now, if you think Norris Lake is just another pretty body of water, think again. I learned that it has some of the best picnic spots and scenic views in Tennessee, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing getaway.

Lake View Trail

Lake View Trail

Before relaxation, I wanted to see as much of the lake as possible, so I went for a hike. I hit the Lake View Trail, which allows you to enjoy lakeside views. That includes a view of the Norris Dam, which I’ve been meaning to see.

The Lake View Trail is a 3-mile loop with its trailhead conveniently starting near the visitor center at the Norris Dam State Park. If you’re planning on doing the same, make sure you’re well-fueled because this trail has some steep climbs.

Once you get past those, though, most of the pathways will already be smooth, with just a few rocks.

Norris Dam

Norris Dam

What I enjoyed the most was seeing the Norris Dam itself. This is a historic place because it has been around since 1936 and still powers many parts of the state to this day.

I checked if they do guided tours, but they are rarely available. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) would offer limited tours during special events like the dam’s anniversary.

Slots are also limited, and I’m not certain if tourists will be prioritized. I feel like the locals would love to see its insides, too, so you’ll probably have to go against them to secure a spot when tours are available.

Anyway, even without a tour, I was already happy with what I’ve seen. Lake View Trail gave me some unique perspectives of the dam, and I was able to take plenty of pretty pictures.

Loyston Point, Stardust Marina, Sequoyah Marina

After conquering the trail, it was finally time to take it easy. I went to Loyston Point, where I booked a cabin on Airbnb. I was able to find a cozy wooden cabin with modern interiors and booked it for a 2-night stay for around $400.

The Harbor Grill

The Harbor Grill

I have to say that Loyston Point didn’t have many dining options, so I had to drive a bit to find some good marina restaurants. I saw The Harbor Grill at Stardust Marina in Andersonville. I wanted a nice drink while enjoying the Norris Lake view and a seafood meal.

However, The Harbor Grill had so many options. They have seafood, burgers, tacos, salads, and wings. They offer a casual dining experience, and when I got there, the restaurant was a bit packed. I ordered a Jumbo Lump Crab Cake served with spring salad ($21.99).

After dinner, I headed back to my cabin. The drive back was peaceful and the air was starting to get cold. I was thinking I’m glad the cabin I rented has a fireplace, and that’s exactly what I enjoyed before I headed to sleep.

Kayaking and Fishing

Kayaking and Fishing at Norris Lake

The next morning, I felt it was time to enjoy Norris Lake itself. After a hearty breakfast in the cabin, I went out to explore some water activities. I ended up at the Sequoyah Marina, where I found a place to rent a kayak.

It was still a bit early, and there weren’t a lot of visitors in the water just yet. Kayaking allowed me to get up close to the lake’s many coves and inlets, where I could see fish swimming beneath the water and hear the gentle rustling of leaves along the shoreline.

After a peaceful paddle, I tried my hand at fishing. The lake is well-known for its excellent fishing opportunities, so I rented some gear when I docked back to the marina. I found a quiet spot along the shoreline, cast my line and settled in to enjoy the tranquility.

Before noon, I was already able to catch a few fish, and it was time to head back to the cabin. To not waste my catch, I decided to make a meal of it. The cabin had a small grill I could use. I just seasoned the fish with salt, pepper, and some dried herbs I found in the pantry.

Picnic

Picnic at Loyston Point

Loyston Point has designated picnic areas that are perfect for a relaxing lakeside meal. After grilling the fish, I packed everything up and headed to one of these spots. I found picnic tables conveniently placed near the water’s edge, and that’s where I enjoyed my fish.

There were a few groups near my table who were also enjoying their lunch. While eating, I watched boats pass by and listened to the sounds of nature around me. It was a delightful way to immerse myself in nature.

Tips for Your Norris Lake Getaway

If you ever find yourself in Norris Lake or you’re still planning your stay, here are some tips I’d like to share:

Maximize Your Morning on the Water

If you want to enjoy kayaking or fishing, hit the water early in the morning. The lake is calm, and there are fewer visitors, giving you a peaceful and uninterrupted experience.

Book a Lakeside Cabin for Comfort and Convenience

Staying at a cabin near Loyston Point, especially one with modern amenities like a fireplace, enhances your relaxation. It offers a blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. After a day of hiking or water activities, unwinding by the fire in a cozy cabin adds to the experience.

Dine at Marina Restaurants for Scenic Views

While Loyston Point lacks dining options, a short drive to nearby marina restaurants, like The Harbor Grill at Stardust Marina, is worth it. Also, don’t miss trying local seafood dishes. Other marinas I saw with dining options are Sugar Hollow Marina and Norris Dam Marina.

A Weekend Well Spent at Norris Lake!

My weekend getaway to Norris Lake was a refreshing escape from the ordinary.

I spent the rest of my stay in the cabin and its surrounding area. I was able to recharge, and I left there feeling ready to take on my day-to-day. I definitely recommend Norris Lake for a relaxing trip.
