This national list includes towns and cities of all sizes and is based on a combination of public data and resident feedback. The rankings consider factors such as school quality, safety, cost of living, job availability, diversity, and overall community experience.

First, Ho-Ho-Kus in Bergen County is ranked #34 in the nation and #1 in New Jersey. This town has a population of about 4,230 people and received an A+ grade overall. It is recognized for its excellent K-8 public school, strong community environment, and safe neighborhoods.

The town has a quiet, small-town atmosphere and is located close to New York City, which makes it convenient for commuters. While it doesn’t have a large commercial area, nearby towns provide easy access to more parks and shops.

Next, Princeton is placed #35 nationally and #2 in New Jersey. With a population of 30,451, Princeton is well known for being home to Princeton University. However, the town itself also offers many amenities.

Princeton has a highly rated public school system, walkable streets, various restaurants and coffee shops, and a diverse population. It is also known for its parks and preserved natural spaces. Although real estate prices are very high and traffic can be a concern, Princeton continues to attract families and professionals because of its strong schools and community resources.

Following that, Ridgewood is ranked #65 in the U.S. and #3 in New Jersey. Located just south of Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood has about 25,000 residents and has earned an A+ grade. It is known for its excellent public schools, large number of parks, and active local businesses.

Residents often mention the town’s variety of restaurants and community events. Ridgewood offers a strong sense of community and a safe environment, so it’s largely sought-after for families.

Then, River Edge, also in Bergen County, ranks #71 nationally and #4 in the state. With a population of 12,024, it is smaller than Ridgewood but still holds high marks for schools, safety, and family-friendliness.

River Edge has two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, which are shared with a nearby town. It has a well-used public library, local parks, and a reputation for being close-knit. Residents appreciate the friendly atmosphere and access to local restaurants.

Lastly, Princeton Junction is ranked #79 in the country and #5 in New Jersey. Though it has a small population of just 1,842, it received an A+ rating due to its highly-rated schools, strong job market, and reliable public transportation. Located near Princeton, this community is especially attractive to commuters. It is clean, quiet, and considered very family-friendly.

Niche’s rankings use public data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They also include millions of reviews from people who live in these communities. In total, there are over 19,000 incorporated cities, towns, and villages across the United States.

In addition to these five towns, New Jersey as a whole ranked #4 in the best states for families in the country. Even though the cost of living and property taxes are high, the state offers benefits like excellent schools, decent parental leave options, and access to a wide range of places.

Residents can travel to beaches, mountains, and major cities, all within a short distance. Also, New Jersey towns often stay active later in the evening, unlike some places where everything closes early.
