East Brunswick Hosts Spring Freecycling Day

East Brunswick will hold its Spring Freecycling Day on Saturday, April 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will take place at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center, located at 721 Cranbury Road.

This event is open to everyone in the area and is completely free to attend. It allows residents to get rid of things they no longer use while picking up items they need, all without exchanging money.

People can begin dropping off items at 9:00 a.m., but the final time to bring items is 1:00 p.m. Browsing will remain open until 2:00 p.m. All items must be usable and in good condition. Anything dropped off must be offered for free and only for personal use. Reselling items is not allowed.

It is important to know that the event will be canceled if it rains. For updates on weather or other event changes, visitors should check the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission website at friendsebec.com.

This event is organized by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, also known as the Friends of EBEC. It is co-sponsored by the East Brunswick Recycling Center, East Brunswick Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Do Not Throw It Away, and Green Drop.

The purpose of Freecycling Day is to help reduce waste. Rather than throwing away usable items, people can bring them to this event and let someone else take them. This keeps items out of landfills and allows others to find things they need for free.

There is a wide range of items people are allowed to bring. These include clothing, shoes, bicycles, fish tanks, dishes, pots and pans, toys, musical instruments, silverware, small appliances, tools, power tools, electronics, kitchen items, garage items, and pet supplies. The items should be taped shut when donating things like board games, boxed toys, or puzzles to avoid losing small parts.

In addition to regular household items, the event will have a separate area for collecting repurposed items. This area will accept socks, crayons, markers, sneakers, notebooks (both new and used), and eyeglasses. Special recycling bins will also be available for items such as Brita products, old pens and markers, notebooks, Mattel and Hasbro toys, and eyeglasses.

While many things are allowed, some items are not accepted under any circumstances, including mattresses, televisions, computer monitors, paints, pesticides, tires, batteries, food, VHS tapes, computer disks, toiletries, and any hazardous materials. Large furniture and heavy machines will not be accepted. Trash cans and unframed mirrors are also prohibited. These items must be disposed of following the township’s regular rules. Organizers have the right to reject any item that does not meet the guidelines.

Volunteers are needed to help on the day of the event. People interested in volunteering for short shifts can sign up through a form on the Friends of EBEC website. Volunteers will help keep the event organized and running smoothly.

The Friends of EBEC is a nonprofit volunteer group based in East Brunswick. Their work includes environmental and educational programs as well as Freecycling Days. These include the Community Garden, Butterfly Park, Amphibian Protection efforts, Moth Nights, and the Option Green series at the library. They also lead the national program called National Moth Week. Membership in the group is free, and anyone can join.
