SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A crash involving a jackknifed tractor trailer carrying a boat on Route 1 caused extensive delays on Oct. 27.

The tractor trailer, a 1987 Kenworth being driven by Peter Stamm, 49, of Stonington, Connecticut, was on Route 1 south in the right lane and had just passed the crest of the highway at Sand Hill Road, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.

Around 7:40 a.m., Stamm reportedly applied his brakes as he slowed for approaching traffic, but the boat on the flatbed he was pulling continued to move forward, police said. The tractor jackknifed and struck a 2008 Volvo being driven by Christine Foy, 27, of Hoboken, that was in the left lane. Foy’s vehicle then struck a 2013 Nissan being driven by Chirayu Patel, 32, of Edison, that was directly in front of her.

The crash caused the fuel tank of the tractor to rupture. The Kendall Park Fire Department and Middlesex County Hazardous Material team contained the spill.

South Brunswick EMS responded to the scene, but all three drivers declined medical attention, according to the statement.

The southbound lanes were closed for two hours. The New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted with rerouting traffic.
