Lambertville Gallery Presents Pam Farrell’s “Language of Birds” and “Lil Landscapes” April 5-28, 2024
New works on paper by artist Pam Farrell will be presented at the JB Kline Project Space on 25 Bridge Street in Lambertville, NJ 08530, from April 5-28. Opening reception Friday, April 5, 6-8 p.m. (Enter via Bucks On Bridge coffee.)
Lil Landscapes is an array of small, landscape-adjacent works of acrylic on paper board. This collection demonstrates a sense of play, described by Ms. Farrell as “largely intuitive, non-specific landscapes done spontaneously, and allowing me to play with color, texture, and space; a lark of sorts.
Language of Birds is a series of monoprints created by pressing sheets of paper against the wet paint surfaces of paintings in progress on canvas or panel. This action is repeated numerous times, building layers of color and texture on the surface over time and from different sources. (Mixed media including oil paint, powdered graphite, powdered pigment, colored pencil, and other drawing media on Kitakata paper).
Artist’s Statement: I began making art as a printmaker and sculptor. Language of Birds, my most recent series, represents an integration of a printmaking technique into my painting process. Working in this manner has made my methodology more dynamic; each monoprint that is lifted also affects the painted “parent” surface, leaving traces of the pressure I apply to lift the paint.
During this process, incidental, random mark-making, such as wrinkles, tears, or holes can occur in the surface of the paper. This aspect of the process bears relation to the Japanese aesthetic and design philosophy of Wabi Sabi, a set of ideas of imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness that ties nature to art. Beyond the placement of the paper on the painting and the pressure applied, there is little control. The resulting imagery is a metaphor for the scars and ravages of time — somewhat unpredictable, with flaws, anomalies, and quirks that are accrued with each additional layer of lifted paint.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Pamela Farrell is an artist who works in various painting mediums from oil and acrylic to encaustic (pigmented molten beeswax). Her paintings and works on paper focus on color field and non-representational imagery. She also works with sculptural materials and photography, creating works through an iterative process often inspired by found objects and materials.
Ms. Farrell earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, with a concentration in sculpture and printmaking. She has shown work throughout the tri-state area, and her art is in numerous private and corporate collections.
In addition to her work as an artist, Ms. Farrell has a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in solo private practice in Princeton, NJ. She lives with her husband, Rocky, and Daisy the cat. Her studio is in Hunterdon County, NJ.
