Celebrate and remember 100 years since the return of women’s suffrage to New Jersey at Wallace House & Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites as part of Somerset County’s Weekend Journey Through the Past.
Wallace House Women: Meet the women who composed Washington’s Headquarters at Wallace House State Historic Site. On a self-guided tour outside the historic house, a series of vignettes introduce women from Hannah Till who worked in slavery and freedom as a cook to Mary Maddox who died 101 years old in 1783 and Martha Washington who spent at least a portion of every winter camp during the Revolutionary War at headquarters with her husband the Commander-in-Chief.
Somerset County’s Suffrage Stories: Follow the long history of women’s suffrage in New Jersey from the 18th century to the 19th Amendment. Discover “Somerset County’s Suffrage Stories” with our historian at our tabletop exhibition featuring Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Site and follow New Jersey’s leading role in the national struggle for women’s suffrage in “Rightfully Hers” a pop-up exhibition from the National Archives. Learn about the loan from our historic collections to “When Women Lost the Vote” at the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.
