NORTH BRUNSWICK — A township police officer is being credited with saving the life of a man who claimed to be suicidal.
Patrol Officer Christopher Trokovich conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 27 around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 7. The vehicle did not stop immediately, traveling just into the city of New Brunswick, according to information released by the North Brunswick Police Department.
During the stop, Trokovich found that the driver’s license was allegedly suspended. As the officer furthered his investigation, the driver again attempted to flee, but was stopped before getting too far, police said.
The driver was apprehended but allegedly continued to pull away and make attempts at running, police officials said, but he was finally restrained by officers.
Officials said the driver then began thanking Trokovich, who has been a member of the North Brunswick Police Department for about two years, because he was reportedly going through a bad time and was suicidal, making attempts at running into oncoming traffic. He thanked the officers for intervening and preventing him from taking any further action, officials said.
The driver was transported to an area hospital for help.
“Of course we are glad that the situation worked out for everyone, with both people involved remaining unharmed,” Police Captain Brian Hoiberg said. “It is also another example of how different and unpredictable every incident can be.”
