Emily Gindin, a resident of Meadow Ridge Senior Living in Redding, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2023, at 91.
She is survived by her children, Janine Gordon and Geoff Drucker; step-children Suzanne Hinsdale and Tom Gindin; grandchildren Arielle Gordon, Douglas Gordon, Jeremy Gordon, and Jackson Drucker; step-grandchildren Corey (Toby) Hinsdale, Andrew Hinsdale, Alice Gindin, and Hannah Petitti; and great-grandchildren James Weinberg and Dylan Weinberg. Her brother, Michael Shimkin, passed away in 2019.
Rebecca and Leon Shimkin-a rising star in the book publishing–welcomed Emily May Shimkin into the world on May 12, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York. They moved a few years later to Larchmont, New York. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1953, Emily worked as a copy editor for Simon & Schuster.
She married Dr. William Drucker in 1956 and delivered her first child, Janine, in 1957 and her second, Geoff, in 1960.
After a divorce, she married William Gindin-later Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the District of New Jersey-in 1965 and moved to Plainfield, New Jersey. Emily volunteered with the American Association of University Women, Recording for the Blind, the Wardlaw-Hartridge School, Mount Holyoke College, and Temple Shalom (where she also sang in the choir).
When her nest emptied, Emily taught English as a Second Language to immigrant students in the Plainfield public schools and later, after a move to Princeton, New Jersey, to spouses of visiting faculty at the university. Emily remained active after leaving Princeton for Naples, Florida, where she volunteered in a reading program.
Following another move to Meadow Ridge Senior Living, Emily assisted with the library, book club, and reading for the blind.
A passion for learning and connection took Emily to every continent except Antarctica and inspired her to welcome travelers from many different countries into her home through exchange programs. Other passions included reading, opera, classical music, and theater.
Emily Gindin will be laid to rest next to her late husband at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin, New Jersey.
