Lawrence Township officials are moving ahead with plans to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Federal Point Boulevard and Federal City Road.

The township will seek proposals from professionals for traffic design work at the intersection, Municipal Manager Kevin Nerwinski said.

The decision to go ahead with installing a traffic signal grew out of a study prepared by traffic consultant Arora and Associates, which stated that a traffic signal is warranted at the intersection.

The traffic study recommended installing separate left turn lanes in both directions at the traffic signal on Federal City Road at its intersection with Federal Point Boulevard.

The study also documented that a traffic signal is warranted at the nearby intersection of Federal City Road and Bull Run Road, which is on the border of Lawrence, Hopewell and Ewing townships.

Residents of the age-restricted Traditions at Federal Point housing development voiced concerns about the additional traffic that would be generated by a new apartment development in Hopewell Township, directly opposite the entrance to their own development.

The entrance to the 300-unit Hopewell Forge apartment complex in Hopewell Township on Federal City Road is opposite Federal Point Boulevard, which is the entrance to the Traditions at Federal Point development.

There are also several offices and a day care center in three office buildings on Federal Point Boulevard in Lawrence Township, which generate traffic.

Lawrence Township officials had asked the townships of Ewing and Hopewell to participate in a cost-sharing agreement for the design of the proposed traffic signals on Federal City Road at Bull Run Road and Federal Point Boulevard.

Ewing and Hopewell townships declined to enter into the cost-sharing agreement, so Nerwinski recommended that Lawrence Township should go ahead on its own for the traffic signal at Federal Point Boulevard.
