Ahead of Downton Abbey’s return to cinemas in A New Era, Professor Melissa Ziobro of Monmouth University explores the history of “Dollar Princesses” from New Jersey. Like Downton Abbey’s fictitious Cora Crawley, these New Jersey women of great wealth but less social standing married into the aristocratic families of Europe who despite their inherited nobility were losing their economic security at the turn of the twentieth century.
