Bordentown School to be one of the topics as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations begin in January.
Perspectives on African American Education: Lessons from the Past will be held from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Mercer County Library System (MCL): Lawrence Headquarters Branch, 2751 Pike, Lawrenceville.
Join MCL in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Dr. Millie Rice Jordan, a former Rider University professor in the School of Education. Rice will share her insights on the challenges and controversies surrounding African American education, using the Bordentown School as an example. The Bordentown School was a residential high school for African American students, founded by Dr. Rice’s grandfather, Reverend Walter Rice, in 1886. Dr. Rice will also discuss the possibility of reopening the school as a juvenile justice facility by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. Rice will give away gifts through a raffle drawing.

MLK Day of Service: Restoring a Cultural Legacy of Care will be held at Mercer County Community College (MCCC): James Kerney Campus, 102 N. Broad St, Trenton from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 15. For more information visit mccc.edu/mlk_dos
Service activities include:
- Sock Drive: Collecting men’s white crew or tube socks for clients of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK).
- Utensil Wrap Up & Bagged Lunches: Packing meals for Trenton residents.
- Community Clean Up: MLK Park and City Streets.
- Trenton Hall Garden Construction: Building raised beds for MCCC’s vegetable garden, providing fresh produce for the college’s food pantry.
- Kidspack 2.0: Providing snacks to the street teams for Jan. 16 walk home
- Blessing Bags: Working with Rescue Mission and Womanspace, providing hygiene products for clients.
Lunch will be served for attendees and there will also be a celebration performance for all to enjoy at the end of the day.

Join West Windsor Arts and the African American Parent Support Group as they partner with local agencies to provide much needed assistance to the people they serve.
Volunteer in-person on Monday Jan. 15 to package donations for distribution and participate in special projects. The total number of volunteer spots are limited for the safety of our participants.
If you can’t make it, advance donations are still needed. Registration for donations is not required.
Donations will be made to RISE Community Service, Children’s Home Society, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK), PEI Kids, Womanspace, MillHill Child Development Center, and Letters Against Isolation.

The Ivy League Educational Foundation Inc., in collaboration with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., will be hosting the 43rd Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholarship Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.
More than 400 people are expected to attend, including many office holders in the city, county, state and federal governments, as well as other civic and religious leaders.
The Reverend Danté R. Quick, Ph.D., senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens (FBCLG), will give the keynote speech. He was elected to serve as the fourth senior pastor of the church in Somerset, New Jersey, on May 22, 2021. The Rev. Dr. Quick previously served as pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Vallejo, Calif., for more than 10 years. He is a graduate of Morehouse College, Princeton Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union, University of California at Berkeley.
The breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Princeton at 102 Carnegie Center, (off Route 1 north) Princeton. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. Tickets are available at bit.ly/mlkbreakfast24 until Jan. 12.
All proceeds support The Ivy League Educational Foundation, Inc., an I.R.C. Section 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to provide scholarships and book awards for area high school students who are pursuing higher education.
